POSITION SUMMARY
The Engineering Technologist in System Planning provides technical support for Hoosier Energy’s system planning activities with a primary focus on power system modeling and data management. This role develops and maintains accurate models of the transmission network, analyzes and manages system, load, and DER data, and ensures timely coordination with internal teams and external entities such as Midwest Independent System Operator (MISO). The position assists System Planners in performing planning analyses and supports compliance with regional planning processes.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, maintain, and validate detailed transmission network models for planning purposes.
- Coordinate model data updates with internal departments and external entities (MISO, neighboring utilities).
- Maintain accurate network data, including ratings, impedances, line miles, and other key parameters.
- Manage and update the model database to ensure consistency and reliability.
- Track internal project schedules and ensure timely submission of projects to MISO Model Manager.
- Review and validate MISO models for accuracy in MISO Transmission Expansion Plan (MTEP) and Definitive Planning Phases (DPP) processes.
- Collect, organize, and maintain meter and load data for system planning.
- Maintain and update Distributed Energy Resource (DER) data and ensure accurate representation in system planning models.
- Assist System Planners with planning analysis, including load-flow and short-circuit studies.
- Document processes and maintain records for compliance and audit purposes.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education:
- Associate Degree in Applied Sciences, Engineering Technology, or technology-related field minimum
- BS Degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology or related discipline preferred
Experience:
- 2 or more years’ experience working in / with electrical systems, transmission modeling or related technical work minimum
- Familiarity with MISO planning processes, NERC reliability standards and related data management systems preferred
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong understanding of transmission network fundamentals, including equipment characteristics, impedance, real and reactive power flow, and generation principles.
- Knowledge of transmission and substation equipment ratings and rating methodology.
- Understanding of DER characteristics and their impact on system models.
- High efficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis, reporting, and visualization.
- Ability to manage large datasets and maintain data integrity.
- Knowledge of load forecasting techniques and data analysis.
- Excellent organizational skills for tracking schedules and managing multiple tasks.
- Effective communication skills for coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.
- Familiarity with power system modeling tools (e.g., PSS®E, TARA) is a plus.
