OPPORTUNITIES
PURPOSE
The Safety and Risk Management Instructor supports the cooperative mission by helping member systems keep their people safe, prepared, and resilient. Through trusted relationships, practical training, and shared learning, this role strengthens safety culture, reduces risk, and ensures cooperative employees can serve their communities safely and confidently.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Researches, develops, and creates quality safety training programs in areas including but not limited to the environment, employee safety, safety codes, fire codes, operator licensing, and vehicle use.
- Facilitates in-person safety training programs for employees of member cooperatives across the state.
- Under the direction of the Director of Safety, Training and Workforce Development, assists with training for the Rural Electric Apprenticeship Program (REAP).
- Sets training expectations and routinely evaluates student performance to grant certification and/or accreditation.
- This position teaches classes at the hands-on schools; this involves teaching the curriculum and grading homework that is distributed throughout the course of the program.
- Works closely with the Program Manager of Safety, Training and Workforce development in the coordination of workflows across member-support initiatives to ensure aligned timelines, communication practices, operational consistency, and coverage of other team members.
- Assists with disaster planning and storm restorations, traveling to cooperative locations to coordinate and route work crews or to work with storm crews as needed.
- Assists IEC members with onsite incident and accident investigations.
- Communicates real-world situations, near misses, and observable learning moments experienced in their daily work with the Director of Safety, Training and Workforce Development, and collaboratively creates forums to share or teach these lessons learned with other co-ops
- Performs Rural Electric Safety Achievement Program (RESAP) audits in compliance with regulatory requirements and relevant co-op agreements.
- Works closely with the other IEC instructors to refine instruction, incorporating experiential learning activities, engagement strategies, and related technology support to ensure training is practical and effective.
- Develops and presents public safety programs to local first-responders, schools community groups, and participants of IEC youth programming.
- Researches, monitors, and disseminates industry trends and safety information generated by OSHA, IOSHA, the EPA, and other relevant agencies; attends conferences and classes to stay current in the field.
- Works collaboratively with IEC Regulatory Compliance Consultants to ensure seamless support, transparent practices, and a co-op-centric approach to ensure compliance and safety goals are achieved.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- Maintains assigned vehicle(s).
- Meets with supervisors to discuss safety issues.
- Instructs members on RESAP.
- Coordinates safety meetings, creates meeting rosters, and files attendance reports and relevant paperwork.
- Conducts assessments such as hearing tests for members’ employees designed to educate and protect against harmful workforce risks
- Completes field reviews with line crews.
- Assists other departments and performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have an equivalent of the following education and/or experience.
- Associate degree with emphasis in line technology, engineering technology, safety, loss control, compliance or a related field is required.
- Five to seven years of journeyman and/or electrical lineman experience is required.
- Certified Loss Control Professional (CLCP), Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), CPR/first aid Instructor, OSHA 10- and 30-hour courses, NUTSEA, and QUAD State instructor courses are preferred.
- Valid driver’s license required; commercial driver’s license preferred.

- Ability to provide input into budget development, to check and verify financial documents, and to purchase equipment/supplies/materials.
- Strong mathematical abilities (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, and ratios), including the ability to apply principles of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry; to process data; and to use a calculator.
