Heartland REMC is seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented Staking Technician to support the design, layout, and coordination of electric and fiber distribution facilities. This role is responsible for ensuring efficient project execution while maintaining high-quality service to our members and compliance with all applicable standards and regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, route, and stake electric distribution and service facilities, including transformers, primary and secondary lines, and services in accordance with member needs and RUS specifications
- Prepare and maintain accurate electronic staking sheets and engineering records
- Obtain GPS coordinates for newly designed facilities
- Secure easements and manage rights-of-way for construction projects
- Coordinate permitting requirements for road right-of-way access
- Assist in planning system expansion, improvements, and long-term infrastructure goals
- Oversee staking of the Construction Work Plan (CWP) in a timely and efficient manner
- Collaborate with consulting engineers and internal departments on projects and system improvements
- Support engineering administrative tasks, including calculations, billing, and recordkeeping
- Assist with contracts and documentation for commercial, industrial (C&I), and subdivision projects
- Address member inquiries, explain project costs, and provide timely responses to service requests
- Maintain strong customer service standards, including returning calls within one business day
- Remain current on National Electric Safety Code (NESC) requirements
- Assist with territory boundary coordination and regulatory matters
- Participate in emergency response situations as needed
- Attend and participate in cooperative meetings
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in a related field preferred
- Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in electric distribution line construction
- Working knowledge of easements, rights-of-way, and utility permitting requirements
- Familiarity with RUS standards preferred
- Strong understanding of electric cooperative systems and service territories
- Proficiency with computers and standard office equipment
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with members, coworkers, and the public
- Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy in documentation
- Willingness and ability to learn new skills and technologies
- Valid Indiana driver’s license required
