Department: Operations and Engineering
Position Summary: Provide Geographic Information System support to the cooperative and members as a whole.
Reports to: System Engineer
Supervises: None.
Essential Duties:
- Operate the Cooperative’s ESRI based Geographic Information System (GIS).
- Assists with GIS Server system, GIS Service communication, Map Document development and maintenance.
- Assists in operating the electric and fiber-optic programs to map lines and track connectivity.
- Assist fiber an electric engineers and technicians with projects; provide GIS data as requested by other departments.
- Utilize and Operate CAD systems and software equipment to design, resize or modify architectural and engineering (A&E) drawings.
- Imports field collected data and incorporates into the GIS system.
- Helps collect and verify GIS data using GPS field collection equipment.
Other Duties: Performs other duties from time to time according to the needs of the Operations and Engineering Department, and the Cooperative as a whole.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
The majority of the work is in the office with occasional outside work with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Outside work may be required in all weather conditions. Some work will be required both after normal hours and on weekends and holidays. The amount of such work will depend on the need and may vary significantly. This position will require the employees’ residence to be within the area designated as outlined in the Jackson County REMC Employee Handbook.
Skills/Qualifications Required:
- Currently pursuing a degree in GIS, Geography, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- Familiarity with ESRI based Geographic Information System (GIS), or a similar system.
- Familiarity with CAD systems
- Basic understanding of GIS data formats.
- Ability to interpret maps, plans, and engineering drawings.
- Basic knowledge of utility locating or the 811 process.
- Understanding of the principles of GIS, its uses, and applications for both electric and fiber-optic broadband systems.
- Basic knowledge in reading and understanding blueprints, subdivision plats, highway/bridge plans, and fiber-optic connectivity schematics.
- Must possess or be able to develop skills with proficiency in operating surveying equipment including transits and compasses.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical tasks.
- Effective communication, problem solving, and comprehension skills are required. Handwriting must be clearly legible.
- Must have the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Must possess or be able to develop computer skills in Microsoft Office software. Familiarity with relational databases.
- Possess the ability to assume responsibility and exercise sound judgment.
- Must have valid Indiana Motor Vehicles operator’s license.
