South Central Indiana REMC (SCI REMC) is a not-for-profit electric distribution, member-owned cooperative. The cooperative is a leader in distribution technology and is headquartered in Martinsville, Indiana. SCI REMC serves seven counties including Morgan, Monroe, Owen, Brown, Johnson, Putnam and Clay with over 3,650 miles of energized lines and 35,500+ electric members and about 12,500 fiber subscribers. In addition to the core businesses of electric and fiber, SCI employs vegetation management personnel to provide exemplary services to support reliability and member satisfaction.
Position Summary
The Safety Professional supports the organization’s commitment to maintaining a safe, compliant, and risk‑aware work environment. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs that protect employees, contractors, and support stable operations.
The Safety Professional conducts regular safety audits, job‑site inspections, and incident investigations to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions. They provide hands‑on training, personally or through local resources, in areas such as electrical, vegetation management and fiber safety, lockout/tagout, material handling, PPE usage, and fleet/driver safety. This role partners closely with operations leadership and support functions to reinforce safe work practices and foster a proactive safety culture.
Qualifications
Education– Bachelor’s degree in a related area or an Associates in a related area with demonstrated industry related safety certification. Successful completion of a recognized Journeyman Line Worker apprenticeship program meets the Associates degree requirement.
Experience— Five (5) or more years of working experience with an electrical utility with at least three (3) years’ experience managing safety or at least eight (8) years of safety experience in an industrial or utility (non-electrical) company. Experience in a rural electric distribution system preferred.

Additional Qualifications:
- Experience as a Journeyman Line Worker, or experience working in Operations with an electrical utility company with hands-on knowledge of electrical distribution safety procedures.
- Ability to evaluate and execute safety management systems and be a continuous change agent for safety culture and vision.
- Ability to educate all levels of employees on safety compliance topics.
- Ability to lead, establish and maintain credibility as the Safety Professional and be a trusted advisor on safety related topics.
- Possesses strong leadership skills with exceptional influencing and interpersonal skills; with the ability to motivate and inspire others, coach and develop talent, navigate courageous conversations, and successfully manage to resolve workplace conflict.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees in a clear, professional, effective manner.
- Ability to develop and effectively present technical safety topics to large groups of employees, members or others.
- Ability to organize and concisely write/update the Safety Manual, safety procedures or policies, EAP and various sections of the Emergency Management Plan (EMP).
- Ability to plan and organize a project or program to meet deadlines within an established budget.
- Functional, working knowledge of common office applications (documents, spreadsheets, presentations, email, others) and the ability to learn others.
- Must be regular in work attendance and available as needed outside of regular office hours.
- Possess and maintain an appropriate level CDL license preferred.
- Must be able to tolerate stress and to remain calm and efficient and courteous under pressure and in urgent or emergency situations.
